Screamin’ Miss Jackson & the Slap Ya Mama Big Band

Screamin’ Miss Jackson & the Slap Ya Mama Big Band releasing their Debut LP ‘I Heard the Voice of a Donut’ on Little Paradise Records in June 2016, are set to have a storming year. Their debut is a delightful roller-coaster romp through a host of roots based genre’s, all the way from dreamy americana, through hokum, jazz, hillbilly country and western swing. After spending the last 3 years playing the length and breadth of the British Isles, exciting crowds at festivals such as Glastonbury, Wilderness and Boomtown along with many more. Sharing stages with Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Hank Wangford and the Lost Cowboys, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, The Wiyo’s and the British roots scene’s brightest shining young light, Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra, the band have taken time out to record with Ben Capp, at the Island in Bristol, following in the footsteps of the likes of Sheelanagig and The Zen Hussies.

Despite being born in the deep south of the U.K and not the Deep South of the U.S. the Screamin’ Miss Jackson & the Slap Ya Mama Big Band album draws influence from diverse players such as early bluesman Casey Bill Weldon, Tampa Red and 20’s and 30’s Jazz Singers like Georgia White, Memphis Minnie or Bessie Smith but the band have much more contemporary influences too, Pokey La Farge, C.W Stoneking and J.D Mcpherson to name a few. The addition of Joss Murray of Babyhead on trumpet and Paul Godden, Van Morrison’s lap steel player, on some tracks only bears this out.

2014 saw Screamin’ Miss Jackson & the Slap Ya Mama Big Band announce themselves properly releasing their first EP on Little Paradise records in May before going on to play Glastonbury, Boomtown, Bearded Theory, Grillstock, and others. On top of this they supported the likes of Reverend Peyton and the Big Damn Band, Hank Wangford and the Lost Cowboys, The Wiyo’s, Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra, The Corn Potato String Band and The Black Twig Pickers.

The hotly tipped Bristol 7 Piece are heading straight back out on tour in March/April for a month long tour prior to the UK festival season kicking off in May. Confirmed for Glastonbury, Wilderness, Great Escape, Boomtown Fair and a whole host of other major festivals in 2016. This is combined with planned appearances/sessions on BBC Radio 4 and 6 Music to coincide with the release of the album. With tracks from the album scheduled to appear on Cerys Matthews 6 Music Show and Bob Harris’ Country Show on BBC Radio 2.
